About NHS

Here at Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Berks, Inc. (NHS), we believe that homeownership builds strong families; strong families build stable neighborhoods; and stable neighborhoods build dynamic, healthy communities.

Therefore, our mission is to facilitate and provide affordable housing programs and initiatives that will 1) expand home ownership opportunities for all people of Berks County, especially low- to moderate-income families, and 2) contribute to the revitalization of our neighborhoods and the greater community.

Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Berks provides guidance and creates opportunities for people who want to purchase and maintain their homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities. We offer homebuyer education, counseling, and lending services. We also work throughout the year to empower residents to become community leaders.

History

Since 1977, NHS has been a neighborhood based nonprofit housing agency located in the City of Reading in Berks County, PA. We are governed by an elected Board of Directors, which is comprised of neighborhood residents, business and government representatives.

We are a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) under the U.S. Treasury, and a certified Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO), under the Federal HOME Program.

We are part of the NeighborWorks network, an affiliation of more than 240 nonprofit organizations located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The NeighborWorks network was founded and is supported by NeighborWorks America, which creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities.

Why is homeownership important to the community – why should it be supported?
